Transition

Year 2 to 3

We work closely with Elson Infant School, as well as other local Infant feeder schools, to ensure a smooth transition.

In addition to the full transition day, where children spend the day at Elson Junior School with their new teacher and class, teachers at the Junior School also spend some time with the year 2 children in their infant classrooms. Year 2 and Year 3 teachers liaise during the summer term to ensure that all relevant information is shared. For some pupils, an enhanced transition may be necessary: this is usually arranged by the SENDCos from both schools.

Parents are also given the opportunity to visit Elson Junior School, and to attend a parent meeting in the summer term. This meeting gives the opportunity for parents to see their child’s new classroom, meet the class teacher, and ask any further questions.

In-year transition

Throughout the child’s time at Elson Junior School, smooth transition from class to class will be encouraged by:

  • Forensic analysis of attainment data

  • Quality handover discussions regarding each child

  • Whole school transition day to allow children time with their new teacher in their new class

  Year 6 to 7

Staff at Elson Junior School have excellent relationships with key staff at local secondary schools and work closely with them to share information.
