Medical

The health, safety and wellbeing of our pupils is a priority. To ensure we can respond appropriately to children’s medical needs, it is important that the school holds accurate and up-to-date medical information for every pupil.

Parents and carers must inform the school as soon as possible of any new medical conditions, diagnoses, allergies or changes to existing medical needs. This includes any changes to medication, treatment plans or emergency procedures. Keeping the school informed enables staff to support pupils effectively and respond quickly should a medical need arise.

Relevant staff receive appropriate training and guidance to support pupils with medical conditions and to respond effectively in the event of a medical emergency.

Our procedures follow the statutory guidance Supporting Pupils with Medical Conditions at School and form part of the school’s wider safeguarding arrangements.

If your child’s medical information changes at any time, please contact the school office so that our records can be updated.

Administering Medicines in School

If your child requires medication to be administered during the school day, parents and carers must complete a Parental Agreement for the Administration of Medicine form which are available from the school office.

For the safety of all pupils, medication must be handed directly to office staff and must not be sent into school with children.

Individual Healthcare Plans

Some pupils with long-term or complex medical conditions may require an Individual Healthcare Plan (IHCP) to ensure that their medical needs are safely supported while they are in school.

Individual Healthcare Plans are developed in partnership with parents or carers, relevant school staff and, where appropriate, healthcare professionals. The plan outlines the support a child may need in school and provides clear guidance for staff on how to respond to their medical condition.

An Individual Healthcare Plan may include:

  • Details of the child’s medical condition

  • Symptoms that staff should be aware of

  • Medication and treatment required during the school day

  • What to do in an emergency

  • Any adjustments needed to support the child’s participation in school activities

Where a plan is required, the school will arrange a meeting with parents or carers to agree the appropriate support and ensure all relevant staff are informed.

Parents and carers play an important role in this process and must ensure the school is kept informed of any changes to their child’s condition, medication or treatment so that the plan can be reviewed and updated when necessary.

Individual Healthcare Plans are reviewed regularly and whenever a child’s medical needs change to ensure the support in place remains appropriate.

Asthma

If your child has been diagnosed with asthma, we ask parents and carers to complete an Asthma Information Form (available from the school office), even if your child does not usually require an inhaler during the school day.

This information ensures that staff are aware of your child’s medical needs and enables us to respond appropriately in the event of an asthma-related concern. The form also provides permission for staff to administer the school emergency inhaler if required.

All inhalers brought into school are:

  • Logged by the school office

  • Clearly labelled with the child’s name

  • Stored in a designated yellow medical bag within the classroom so they are readily accessible when needed

Parents and carers must also ensure the school is informed of any changes to their child’s asthma management, medication or treatment.

Guidance on When to Send Your Child to School

We understand that it can sometimes be difficult to decide whether your child is well enough to attend school.

The NHS provides helpful online guidance for parents and carers to support decision-making when a child is unwell.

It also explains when children should remain at home and when they can safely return to school.

Our priority is to ensure that all pupils are safe, healthy and ready to learn, while promoting strong attendance and wellbeing.
